Managing Vertigo Naturally:

An Herbalist’s Approach

Background

As a 66-year-old herbalist with a history of three concussions and one case of whiplash, vertigo has become an unwelcome but not surprising companion. Rather than turning to conventional medicine, I’ve developed a natural protocol that manages my symptoms effectively — and in some cases stops an active episode within two to three minutes.

Understanding My Vertigo

What I experience is classic BPPV — Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo — caused by displaced otoliths (tiny crystals) in the semicircular canals of the inner ear. My history of head trauma means these crystals dislodge easily and don’t always respond reliably to conventional repositioning maneuvers like the Epley Maneuver.

My Specific Triggers

Over time I’ve identified three distinct trigger categories:

  • Vibration triggers — eating crunchy foods like raw carrots, dental drilling
  • Movement triggers — turning my head quickly while walking
  • Pressure triggers — wind and barometric weather changes

Each of these disturbs the unstable crystals through a different mechanism, but the result is the same — that disorienting whooshing sensation and full vertigo episodes.

Practical Solutions I’ve Found

For Wind and Pressure

I wear small ear muffs that fit directly over my ears when outdoors in windy weather. They create a simple pressure barrier that prevents wind-driven air pressure changes from triggering symptoms. It’s a simple, inexpensive solution that makes outdoor activity much more manageable.

For Known Triggers Like Dental Work

When I know in advance that I’m going to experience vibration or trauma near my inner ear — like a dental appointment — I take my vertigo blend preventively beforehand. Going in with already-optimized cerebral circulation means my vestibular system handles the disturbance much better.

My Vertigo Blend

This isn’t one formula I distill myself — it’s three separate preparations I combine together in a cup of hot water: one teaspoon of my Brain Formula extract, one-quarter to one-half teaspoon of my Super Ginseng extract, and a teaspoon of dried ginger root steeped as a tea bag right alongside the extracts.

What Each Part Contributes

Brain Formula — Ginkgo-Led

Brain Formula is a Ginkgo-forward blend (Ginkgo Leaf, Gotu Kola, Calamus Root, Rosemary Flowers, Kola Nut, and Cayenne Pepper) that’s been used for generations specifically to support brain and inner-ear circulation. Ginkgo has long been recognized for increasing blood flow to the brain, and has traditionally been used for tinnitus, hearing and eyesight problems, memory, and vertigo itself — balance problems and dizziness are named directly in its traditional profile. Rosemary and Cayenne add their own circulatory support alongside it.

Super Ginseng — 50% American Ginseng, 50% Siberian Ginseng

  • American Ginseng contributes calm, sustained focus
  • Siberian Ginseng (Eleuthero) supports stress adaptation and stamina
  • Together they ease the brain fog and fatigue that often come with a vertigo flare — their role here is more supportive than direct, since they don’t act on inner-ear circulation the way Ginkgo does

Dried Ginger Root

Steeped as a tea alongside the extracts rather than blended into either one, ginger adds its own vasodilating effect and has a well-documented traditional history of use for vertigo and vestibular disturbances. It also helps carry the other herbs into the body more readily.

Why It Works So Fast

Because the Brain Formula and Super Ginseng are already alcohol-based extracts, and I take them in a cup of hot ginger tea rather than swallowing a capsule, they’re absorbed quickly through the stomach and mucous membranes — part of why an active episode can be stopped within two to three minutes, with severe episodes resolving in ten to fifteen minutes with a couple of doses.

The mechanism appears to be primarily vascular — Ginkgo (the dominant herb in Brain Formula) rapidly improves blood flow to the brain and inner ear, while the ginseng blend and ginger support overall circulation and ease brain fog. The displaced crystals may be the trigger, but insufficient circulation to the vestibular system is what turns a minor disturbance into a full episode.

The Broader Picture

What I’ve essentially built is a three-layer management system:

  1. Physical barrier — ear muffs blocking pressure-based triggers
  2. Preventive protocol — taking my vertigo blend before known triggers
  3. Acute intervention — using the same blend to stop active episodes quickly

None of this involves prescription medication. It’s the result of years of observation, experimentation, and deep familiarity with how these plants work in the body.

I am an herbalist sharing my personal experience and protocol. This is not medical advice. Individual results will vary based on your own health history and constitution.

Natural Support for Vertigo

Here is an update on my healing Journey for Vertigo.  Understanding what is causing the Vertigo has been very helpful in discovering how to support and clear the issue.

The cause for me is: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) which is the most common cause of vertigo, and it’s often caused by calcium crystals that detach from their normal location in the inner ear. These crystals can then move into the semicircular canals, which sense head rotation, causing the canals to send the wrong signals to the brain. This confuses the brain, leading to the vertigo symptoms that include:

  • A spinning sensation when the head position changes
  • Falling out of bed or losing balance when getting up
  • Falling when tilting the head back or forward while walking
  • Nausea and vomiting

There are several positional exercises you can do that are said to be helpful in clearing the symptoms from Vertigo.  After trying them and not finding them to be as effective as the herbal supports or topical application we will not discuss them in this article.  Members have shared their experiences; some have found them to be very effective.  My best suggestion is to try them for relief as some have said they are helpful, detailed instructions can be found on Youtube.

Herbal Supports that have proved very helpful in stopping the symptoms are:

Brain Food formula: 1 to 2 tsp. in a cup of hot water.  I add a little almond milk to my teas.

NF Formula: ½ tsp in with the brain Formula.

Cayenne: 1 tsp.  This I add to make what I like to call my Hot Lemonade.

  • 1 tsp Cayenne
    • 1 Tablespoon Apple Cider vinegar
    • Lemon Juice to taste
    • Maple Syrup or Honey to taste.
    • 16 to 32 ounces of cool  or cold water

The Cayenne can be taken in a few swallows of water or can be added to the Hot Lemonade.

Topically to aid in clearing the crystals I have found using the Charcoal/Flax Poultices over both ears to be really effective.  Three applications seems to be the key.

Aid to Clear or Prevent Vertigo

Apply the Poultices over both ears for three hours three times.  My experience has been the symptoms have ended after the third application.  Unfortunately every time I have to visit the dentist the issue begins again. My Dentist appointments are on Thursday afternoon, each time it has taken until Saturday afternoon for the vertigo to start up again.  After my last visit we began applying the poultices as a preventive on Thursday night and Friday during the day.  There was only a very mild bit of vertigo on Saturday afternoon.  It seems to have worked very well as a preventive.  I still have two more visits to the Dentist before all this work is done.  I’m not looking forward to them but after the excellent results after this last visit it appears we have a very good game plan to deal with the issue.

The Poultices is held in place with two wide sweat bands.

Vertigo Testimony

Learning something new is always a blessing, the part I wish I could skip is the discomfort that often precedes the acquiring of the knowledge.  Several weeks ago I bit down on a date seed and broke my tooth.  Not a lot of pain or discomfort at this point.  I was able to get right into the dentist who referred me to an oral surgeon and was told the earliest available appointment was sometime in March.  To shorten this part of the testimony I will say,  I found a great dentist who does it all.  The tooth was pulled, it came out in four parts, not fun.

Onto the learning something new part.  I developed a severe case of vertigo.  My husband did a little research online and discovered it is common to develop vertigo after oral surgery.  Something about messing with nerves in your head.  Not being new to this issue I was using Cayenne to clear the woozy head spinning, nausea, feeling awful, issues.  It just was not working well at all.

If it had only been a little light headedness I could have gotten thought somehow but the Vertigo was also affecting my blood pressure.  Those spikes were serious.  My husband and I prayed asking the Lord for answers.  I finally decided to call the paramedics, the blood pressure had to be addressed.

Now I can share how well the Lord answers prayers.

The two men who arrived had been working as paramedics for a long time.  The one truly understood my aversion to doctors and hospitals.  He had some understanding of herbs and believed in their power.  Understanding that I had been using the cayenne without effect he suggested I use herbs that work to dilate the blood vessels.  What herb is best for this, he asked.  Ginkgo biloba, of course, was my answer.  With that information in mind I took a full teaspoon of the Brain Formula, which is mostly Ginkgo.  Everything cleared in a matter of minutes.  The Father will answer us when we call for help.  He sent someone with the answers I needed in a way I never expected.

So here is what I have learned this past week.

Using any source of caffein will bring on vertigo.  No Coffee, Green or black Tea, or Chocolate as they are high in Caffein which is a vessel constrictor.

Using the Brain formula & Cayenne have completely cleared the symptoms of vertigo.  My dose has been 1 teaspoon two or three times a day.

I’m also doing a strong infection program as the broken tooth became infected before it was pulled.

In the past Cayenne alone was enough to clear the head spinning episodes I occasionally had.  Understanding how to truly stop the issue is impowering .

Herbal Support for the Sympathetic Nervous System

This past week I received an early morning call from a distressed  member.  Throughout the night he had found it impossible to fall asleep.  Every time he would begin to dose off his body was emotionally jarred back to wakefulness.  He described it like a gunshot going off in the room causing his pulse to shoot up, throwing him straight into an anxiety attack.  He used the Nerve Food formula he had on hand which aided in calming the anxiety but was not able to stop the body from sending out the alarm signals throwing him into “Fight Or Flight” mode.

The fight or flight response is an automatic physiological reaction to an event that is perceived as stressful or frightening. The perception of threat activates the sympathetic nervous system and triggers an acute stress response that prepares the body to fight or flee.

His description of events brought to my mind an herbal remedy my father, Dr. Carlous Mason Dsc, had used when his patients had been stuck in an Adrenal spin, (aka Fight or Flight Mode) unable to calm down.  His specialty was Low Blood Sugar and Diabetes.  I remember he used Uva Ursi, as an herbal support that worked very effectively.

Uva Ursi, an herb that is commonly used to support the renal system.  It’s valuable in any formula supporting the Kidneys, Bladder or for men, the prostate, it is also an excellent support herb for any diuretic formula.    Uva Ursi, is not a nervine herb, which are the herbal supports used as sedatives, calming to the nerves, and food to rebuild nerve tissue.  When dealing with a body unable to calm down the first thoughts would be to use a calming blend of herbs to settle them down.   I’m so grateful our member already had my “go-to” favorite blend of nervine herbs on hand for emotional support and  anxiety attacks, allowing both of us to know nervine herbs were not the answer for ending the adrenal spin he was in.

Uva Ursi is not a detoxing herb, it is extremely uncommon to have any detoxing backlash from using the high dose of 6 to 8 capsules, Dr. Mason, recommended to shut down the sympathetic nervous system, which is activated when the body is unable to calm down from the “Flight or Fight” Mode.

After sharing Dr. Mason’s herbal suggestions with our member he decided to pick up a bottle of Nature’s Way, Uva Ursi capsules.  I received a text from him later that evening.  He shared that an hour after he had taken 8 of the capsules he was finally able to fall asleep.  He slept deeply for four hours.  When he awoke he felt calm, all the anxiety was gone.  He decided to use the herbs again that night and has no issues to share with repeated use of the high dose.

Herbal common sense would suggest using this herbal support when the body needs the help to shut down the sympathetic nervous system.  It is not a nervine herb to be used to settle the nerves or induce sleep on a regular basis.

With the permission of Dr. Tim Jennings I have posted two articles from his blog that explain the changes in the body when the Sympathetic Nervous System is activated.  Which by the way shuts down our ability to reason clearly.  Living in fear prevents us from being able to make good decisions.

Understanding The Brain

The human body is an extremely intricate, divinely computerized and a highly evolved vehicle.  It is much like man-made vehicles in that it must be in perfect running condition in order to get a “good performance.”

The nervous system consists of three major parts that must be in a healthy condition in order to work smoothly together.  First let’s consider the brain

Brain

The encephalon.  That part of the central nervous system contained in the cranial cavity, consisting of the cerebrum, cerebellum, pons and medulla oblongata.

Cerebrum

The chief portion of the brain, occupying the whole upper part of the cranium, and consisting of the right and left hemispheres; the endbrain; telencephalon

 Cerebellum

The inferior part of the brain lying below the cerebrum and above the pons and medulla, consisting of two lateral lobes and a middle lobe.

Pons

A convex white eminence situated at the base of the brain.  It consists of fibers and nuclei which receive impulses from the cerebral cortex, and sends fibers to the contralateral side of the cerebellum by way of the brachium pontes.”

Medulla oblongata

The upper, enlarged part of the spinal cord, extending from the cord opposite the foramen magnum to the pons.”

The above gives a brief general description of the brain, showing where the various sections lie in the cavity, but let’s go in a little deeper to see how the different sections of the brain work together.

The following information is taken from The New Modern Home Physician, (Wm. H. Wise and Co., Inc., 1947):

  • “The large masses of nervous tissue forming the brain has an average weight of forty-nine ounces in a male adult.
  • The structure of the brain shows extraordinary complexity.
  • The larger part consists of the cerebrum in the form of two hemispheres, right and left, which are connected together by a broad band of fibers running transversely, and known as the corpus callosum.
  • Below this come, in succession and on either side, masses of gray nervous matter, the optic thalamus and corpus striatum, and a stalk, the crus, literally a limb.
  • Then there is the pons or bridge, and lastly the medulla oblongata or bulb which is continuous with the spinal cord (q.v.).
  • Behind and below the cerebral hemispheres is the cerebellum, or little brain, which also consists of two hemispheres.  These are connected with each other by a central part called the vermiform process and also through the pons.

Nervous Matter

Nervous matter is of two kinds, gray and white.  The former consists of nerve cells and their processes, and the latter of medullated nerve fibers, that is to say, nerve fibers which have a protective white sheath.  Both the fibers and the cells are supported by a kind of connective tissue called neuroglia.

The outer surface of the cerebrum and of the cerebellum is composed of layers of gray matter, and this is infolded, forming convolutions, affording thereby an increase in the area of the brain surface.

The optic thalamus, as stated, is composed of gray matter, and besides this there are other masses in the base of the brain, in the crus, the pons and the medulla.  It is in the cells of the gray matter that nerve energy originates.  The nerve fibers of the white matter merely transmit such energy.

Within the brain there is a series of cavities known as ventricles, which communicate with each other and have a canal that runs down the center of the spinal cord.  These are filled with a watery fluid, called the cerebrospinal fluid.  The brain is covered by three membranes, the pia mater, in close contact with the brain substance, the arachnoid and the dura mater.  The last is in two layers, one lining the interior of the skull, and the other supporting the brain and sending folds into the deep fissures in the brain in order to accomplish this.

The space beneath the arachnoid is filled with cerebrospinal fluid, which is in communication with the fluid in the ventricles of the brain through certain openings at the back of the medulla oblongata.  This fact is of importance in connection with the occurrence of hydrocephalus (q.v.). It will be appreciated also that, as a preventive against injury, the brain has the advantage of resting on a water cushion.

The deeper fissures seen on the surface of a cerebral hemisphere mark its division into lobes.  The fissure of Rolando (after the Italian anatomist, Lugi Rolando), which, beginning a little behind the top of the head, runs obliquely downwards and forwards, marks the boundary between the frontal lobe in front and the parietal lobe behind.  The occipital lobe lies behind the parietal, and below these is the temporal lobe.  The mention of these lobes simplifies reference to the functions of the brain.  The gray matter on its surface contains millions of nerve cells, which are grouped according to the work they do.  In front of the fissures of Rolando is the area concerned with initiating voluntary movements, subdividing into parts serving the leg, arm and face in this order from above downwards.  The left side of the brain serves the right side of the body, however, and vice versa.

Sensation is to some extent served by this area, but more by the parietal lobe.  Tactile sensations and those of pain and temperature are, however, appreciated by the optic thalamus; but this is under the control of the cerebral cortex or outer surface, and if this control is lost pleasing sensations become more pleasing and painful more painful.  In the optic thalamus, also, it would appear that movements expressive of emotion originate, smiling, for example, or grimacing from pain.

The center for hearing is in the temporal lobe, and the smell seems to be related to a part of the brain at the anterior extremity of this lobe.  The centers for vision are in the occipital lobe.  The speech centers appear to be in the lower frontal and parietal lobes on the left side for a right-handed person.  The cerebellum is of importance in preserving equilibrium, and in coordinating the movements of muscles so as to permit the performance of complicated actions.

From the brain comes twelve pairs of nerves, whose names and actions are as follows: (1) olfactory, subserving smell; (2) optic, nerve of vision; (3) oculomotor, supplying most of the muscles which move the eyeball and the muscle which contracts the pupil; (4) nerve supplying the muscle which turns the eyeball downwards and outward; (5) trigeminal, nerve supplying sensation to the face, etc., and to the muscles of mastication; (6) nerve supplying the muscle which turns the eyeball outward; (7) facial, nerve supplying the muscles of the face; (8) auditory, subserving hearing; (9) glossopharyngeal, a nerve of taste, also supplying sensation to the inside of the throat and activating some muscles there; (10) vagus, or wandering nerve, supplying the heart, lungs, stomach and other viscera, etc., (11) spinal accessory, supplying muscles in the neck; (12) hypoglossal, supplying the muscles moving the tongue.

The blood supply of the brain is derived from the internal carotid and the vertebral arteries.  The venous blood and cerebrospinal fluid drain into the large venous channels, known as sinuses, which, in turn, pour their contents mainly into the internal jugular vein.  At various points on the surface of the skull these sinuses are connected with external veins, which, if they become infected, may communicate infection to the veins within.  One of the sinuses, the sigmoid, lies on the inner side of the mastoid process, and not infrequently becomes infected in suppurative disease of the middle ear.

Nerve disorders can be cured—but it takes total, dedicated to the natural programs to do it.

In this information sheet, you will read about people with various nervous system diseases who were cured.  Doctors may say these people were in remission, but between you and me, they were cured.

There is no wonder substance, or “herb in a capsule” that will correct these disorders.  And I can’t believe people are so ignorant as to believe that drugs can cure these diseases, or that they ever will.

Nervous disorders are total system breakdowns.  To think you can cure them with a drug is as nuts as believing that some gasoline additive can “cure” a car whose motor is worn out.  If you have one of these diseases, you need a complete overhaul, the whole Incurables Program.  Do not be tempted to pick some herbs from this chapter and try them first.  Do the whole program, or don’t waste everyone’s time.

That means the cold sheet treatment, the hot and cold showers, the juice fasting—all of it.

This Information sheet is drawn from a conversation Dr. Richard Schulze had with Sam Biser.  It begins with a long discussion of the various factors that are specific to curing these diseases.  Then, they discuss several cases in detail so that you can see how these principles are applied.

Healing the Mind Class

Brain Fog

Our class this week is going to focus on herbal supports for healing the mind. What can be done to nutritionally support the body and mind. We will look at the herbal supports that aid in sharpening the mind, clearing depression and the best food program to support the health of the brain.

Our Tuesday evening class provides an opportunity to ask your questions and share what works and what has proven to be less that helpful. Members will receive an email sometime Tuesday with the Zoom Class Link. Class begins at 6:30 EST.

An excellent book on brain health is: The Aging Brain by Dr. Tim Jennings

Dr Tim Jennings: Modern Medicine Seminar deals with the “Developing Brain” and the “Aging Brain”. These two videos are not to be missed. In his discussion on the brain he covers how our DNA is affected by our early experiences. He also provides several suggestions on how to heal damaged DNA.

Insomnia Class

Dara Dietz

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, hard to stay asleep, or cause you to wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. You may still feel tired when you wake up. Insomnia can sap not only your energy level and mood but also your health, work performance and quality of life.

How much sleep is enough varies from person to person, but most adults need seven to eight hours a night.

During the hormonal shifts brought on by Menopause I developed an acute case of Insomnia. It is not uncommon for women, after child birth or during menopause, to develop Insomnia. During this time I discovered what would work and what did not help much.

Herbal Supports were very helpful as far as they went. The General Nervine Tonic proved most effective. One of the best long term supports was Liver Flushing. Clearing the toxins from my system ensured several weeks of good sleep. Walking Bare-foot outside on the grass or ground proved very beneficial. The earth is our best grounding rod, walking bare foot on the earth allows the static electricity to be pulled from the body. When the system is overloaded with static electricity the nerves are unable to relax, shut down, and allow sleep.

The Class will meet on Zoom Tuesday November 16th, 2021, at 6:30 PM Est. Members are welcome to join our class by clicking on the link in the email sent out on Tuesday.

Several great suggestions for clearing insomnia:

  • Make sure your bowels are open and moving well.
  • Stop using any stimulates such as coffee, tea, chocolate ect…
  • Remove all electronical equipment for the bedroom.
  • Stop eating in the evening. No food after 6pm.
  • Walk bare foot outside for 15 minutes each day.
  • Do an ELF once a week or more often if needed. (ELF=Emergency Liver Flush)

On the video below, Dr Tim Jennings, speaks on The Aging Brain and provides some great information on sleeping disorders.

Understanding Nervine Herbs

NeckPain

The nervine combinations and herbs have been proven useful aids in relaxing the systems of the body as well as calming the mind, and relaxing the muscles.  Over the years I have discovered several truths about the herbals, one truth is the herbs have the ability to affect the emotional and spiritual life in the same way they affect the physical body.  An example is Uva Ursi, an excellent diuretic it aids in the removal of excess fluid from the body.

My father used Uva Ursi in his healing practice as an aid for those who were stuck in fight-or-flight mode.  He was a bit ahead of his time in his understanding of how this mindset would affect the overall health of the body.  He had discovered how useful this herb could be in soothing the mind and emotions allowing the body to calm naturally.  Listening to him counsel his clients I was able to gleam this little pearl along with many others.

As a young adult; I would take 5 capsules of this herb just before bedtime, which would cause me to fall asleep.  When I woke up the sense of emotional clearing was with me, I felt like someone had pulled a plug allowing all the pent-up emotions to drain out. After discovering the power of the herbal extract I have found 1 tsp. of Uva Ursi has a diuretic effect on the emotions, it has proven to be an excellent aid when used appropriately at aiding the heart and mind to clear the emotional stress caused by emotionally feeding on negative and stressful issues.

Old habits of thinking must be changed.  No herbal support can do this work for us; even so, creating a calmer, relaxed condition of the mind and spirit can aid to protect the health of the body while making it easier to choose a better, healthier, happier way of thinking.

A useful herbal combination is Mullein and Lobelia.  Lobelia as a nervine has a calming effect on the entire body, stopping physical spasms as well as calming serious emotional upsets.  Used as a topical salve these two herbs are a powerful topical antispasmodic, quickly relaxing muscle spasms, calming spastic coughing fits.  Dr Christopher developed this combination as an aid for the Thyroid and glandular system.  As a salve the combination has proven a valuable addition to any herbal medicine cabinet.

cup-of-tea-01

The herbal NF (Nerve Food) combination has aided everything from insomnia to panic attacks.  One of the best emotional support combinations this writer has ever worked with, I’ve been truly impressed.

HEAL’s three sleep aids; General Nervine, Insomnia, and Sleep Aid each have their own special personality.  The General Nervine is a strong calming and restorative aid for the nerves, it may be used during times of severe stress in low doses during the day to prevent a complete emotional breakdown; it shores up the emotional strength preventing the descent into hysterics.

The Insomnia is a nice sleep aid, allowing the body to become drowsy.  This is a formula that fits some very well while others have indicated it not that effective.

Sleep Aid is a calming aid for the entire body.  I’ve personally used this to calm my restless legs issues.  A teaspoon full in water works to clear that crawly, restless feeling in my legs.  I also find my sleep restful and unbroken when this formula has been used before bedtime.

Brain, Nerves & Sleep, Emotional Healing, Herbal Healing, My Opinion

Emotional First Aid

Dara Dietz

Most associate the idea of “first aid” with stopping the flow of blood and or preventing shock after an accident.  I’d like to put out the idea of emotional first aid.  Knowing how to assist someone facing an unexpected loss or change of circumstances can be as important as supporting physical injuries.  Facing a life altering event alone can crush the physical life of nearly anyone.  An understanding friend standing silently by our side during times of crisis is a gift of inexpressible worth.  Nature has also provided several herbs to support as well as heal the physical and emotional nervous system.  The combination known as The “NF” formula (Nerve Food) is an excellent support in times of extreme stress as well as supporting the healing process during the long journey back to emotional health.

The General Nervine formula is not only an excellent sleep aid but when given during the day in lower dosages can be used for emotional crisis management. I have seen firsthand how this formula will allow the mind to process the changes while keeping the emotions from cascading out of control.  The sting of loss will come to all of us at some point.  Pain when embraced as a teacher can uplift and ennoble as the heart and mind find the inner strength to rise above and move on.  The discovery, the gift, is that you are more for having passed through the fire.
